One of my cabin fever activities this weekend was going through my stack of printed articles and recipes. I found several recipes I had to pull out to the top because they are ones I've tried in the past (and really liked), but then went away from them for whatever reason. I'm all about "K.I.S.S.", and it seems like the longer the ingredient list, the less likely I am to try it (or try it again).
There hasn't been much recipe talk here for awhile. There have also been a lot of newbies come aboard this past year. I thought maybe it was time to post some favorites, and hopefully others will too. I'll add some as I can, and give credit when I can remember where I got them.
Starting with simple, here's one of the easiest, with fewest ingredients. I've probably used it more than anything over the last 2 years. I believe it can catch fish anywhere, anytime. Dan Rockel picked up this recipe version somewhere, got me hooked on it, and I've carried boxes of Oats around ever since.
Quick Oats
Old Fashioned Oats
(You can buy the 2-1/2 lb. round boxes at any grocery store about $2+ each.)
Kosher Salt
Creamed Corn
Mix equal parts of the 2 Oats with a handful of salt and as much creamed corn as it takes to hold. Flavor added to the creamed corn or on your method ball is optional, but not needed.
This stuff is deadly fished with one or two fake corn kernels on a hair rig.

Here's one that I got from T last summer. Makes a large batch that will keep awhile. I need to make this one again.
Cracked Corn Pack
4 lb. cracked corn
2 lb. oats
2 litre (8-1/2 cups) hot water
stir, then cover for 10 minutes
add ˝ bottle flavor (Superior)
stir, then cover for 10 minutes
add quick oats if needed to tighten

"Carp Crumble" at the baitshop
I thought it was Chicken Layer, it comes in pellets, or fine ground
Joey I have heard of that pack also from Rick
CarpSinatra
Jan 13 2009, 05:56 PM
Speaking of Rick, Mr. Slinker gave me a recipe before my first ever Fish-in (Monroe day/night, Aug.'05):
1 box Cornflakes (smashed)
1 pack Jiffy Mix (banana nut)
1 can of creamed corn
1 box of banana pudding
Soybean Meal (as needed)
Potato Flakes (if necessary)
"Add in as much soybean meal as it takes to break as fast or slow as you want. If mix is too soft, add in potato flakes. If I use pack, I fish with 1/8 ounce egg sinker and free line it."
I caught my first Fish-in Carp using this in the stormy evening session. Charlie Napier later shared the hot grits on puff recipe that slaughtered the field during the hot, windy day session. He caught maybe eight fish, while the other 15-20 guys caught maybe a total of eight. (Charlie - please post it again as I can't find any of the copies I had. I remember ordering instant, quick and hot cinnamon from Betsy's.)

Give this one a go....2lb Fine Breadcrumbs
1lb Hempseed(cooked and blitzed in processor)
Soy bean meal (to your breakdown requirments)
1 Tablespoon Salt
1 Tablespoon Chilli powder
Cream corn if you wish...if it gets too loose, add more Breadcrumb.
Tight lines.

8 cups Calf Manna
4 cups chick feed
2 cups soy meal
2 cups wheat bran
6 cups hot water
add 2 cans drained wkk right before you start fishing and it's good to go.
I will usually use this one with a cinnimon or an orange spice boilie. I use it without any additional flavoring most times but when the fishing is slow I will apply RWB Legend to the ball. It's been my Ohio River pack for many years now.

One that I used last s ummer..
Bread crumbs
Chicken scratch
Range cube dust
Cream corn
Pineapple mush (Take a can of pin apple and drain it then throw it in the blender)
boiled birdseed that was soaked in the pinapple juice then boiled in the juice with water.
I never had a set amount of each I just kinda went with it and made it by feel.

Six cups of Super Cast Milliebomb
One forth cup of ground Steam Rolled Oats
One cup of Corn Meal
One Cup of Soy Meal
You can sub the Milliebomb with Japanenee Bread Crumbs and finely ground crack field corn.
Really works well in early spring and late fall.

Here's a millet recipe that The Magnet passed on to me a couple of years ago. It's one I really liked, and need to try again.
3 cups hulled millet
1 cup wheat bran
˝ cup soy meal
1-1/3 cup flour
4 oz. Karo syru
4 oz. liquid flavor (maple syrup, Superiors, etc.)
Mix dry ingredients and set aside.
Mix liquid ingredients and heat gently (do not boil).
Mix liquid into dry ingredients. Let set a couple of hours.
If you use “non-syrup” flavors, may need to add more Karo for binding.
Packs hard as a rock, but breaks quickly. Great fished on a puff or a bead.

2 pounds dried molasses
2 pounds japanese breadcrumbs (sold at Westside)
1 pound wheat bran
water or cream corn
this bait should pack extremely well and still break down quick
Carp Matador

heres another
2 and a half pounds of crcked corn boiled till almost binds
2 pounds of calf manna pellets (also sold at Westside)
1 handful of cinnamon
1 handful of salt
takes a while to make but it turns out worth it
p.s. sorry T if you didn't want me to give it up

Here's the only Rice Pack I have made successfully. One out of two's not bad. I forget who I stole it from.
1 28 oz. box of MINUTE RICE
1 32 oz. bottle HUNTS Ketchup
8 oz. of non-chlorinated water
1 tbsp. Kosher Salt
Pour the Rice into a 5 gal. bucket with a lid that will seal.
Put the Ketchup, water, Salt, and flavoring (Superior VBN, 1 and 1/2 inches out of the bottle), into a pot and bring to boil. Pour the boiling liquid onto the rice and stir.
Put the lid on. Pick the bucket up and slam it down on the floor twice, hard enough to make everything go to the bottom of the bucket. Then let it sit an hour.
Open the bucket and stir by hand completely. Put the lid back on and let stand for another half hour.
Will be a little sticky to start with but after an hour or so will be great.
(I have substituted "cheaper than brand-name" rice and ketchup, as well as tap water with no problem.)

Here's one I think I robbed from a Charlie Napier post. Try it. You'll like it.
Fruity Pebbles Pack
7 cups Soybean meal
1-1/2 cups flour
1-1/2 cups Fruity Pebbles cereal
1 cup wild bird seed
1 jar strawberry preserves
1 can creamed corn
5 oz. Jello (Mix Island Pineapple, Banana Cream, and Cherry. Then use only 5 oz. of mixture.)
When I made this, I remember it being a bit wet. So I suggest a small jar of preserves. When done, it smells lovely.

Here's One that I hope that Jimmy won't get upset about!
A modified version of Jimmy's Hoosier Blend!
3- cups of hoosier Blend (Jimmy's recipe)...Base Mix
then I add:
1 1\2- cups of ferret feed (finely ground) smells fishy!
1- cup of bean meal
1\2- cup of wild birdseed (pre soaked)
1\2- cup of quick grits
cream corn
Breadcrumbs are optional if the mix is too wet, also I fished this with no added flavors in the mix!
Added flavors didn't trigger any bites!
Trust me I did my homework on this one, when i stopped adding flavors and fished it plain I caught fish..... on 4 different waters with this mix!

I'm new to the euro style fishing. One of my biggest frustrations is using pack bait. It's seems I fling the pack bait off during my cast....I try not to cast hard ...more of a pitch/lob cast. I follow the instructions in making the pack and keep it in a seal tight bucket...usually it works well the first hour or two during a trip, but after that is when the problems start. I have done several things to try and get it to pack...such as add a little water from the lake/river to loosen it up or add oats or potato flakes to tighten it up, I have even used cake mix which I found out is more of a binder and usually the pack won't break down for me. I usually just give up and end up fishing my primary bait without pack. I always have better results using my primary bait with pack. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Brad

I have never been able to master the art of casting with pack so I put it all in PVA bags. Once in the water, the PVA bag melts and your bait is dispersed into the water. This works well for me.

http://www.carpanglersgroup.com/forum/inde...9623&hl=pva(I wouldn't give up so quickly on pack bait or method feeding. Many of us have dabbled with PVA. I have found it to be more of a pain than packin' the lead. Most guys on the bank are packing their bait on feeders/gripper leads. I see only a few guys using PVA exclusively. Not trying to start a debate, just hate for you to believe that PVA is an easier option.)
